It may take several weeks to months for swelling to fully diminish. As swelling and bruising gradually decrease, the visible improvements from your neck lift will become apparent: a more youthful and refreshed appearance that boosts your self-confidence.

Step 1: Incisions and Tissue Manipulation

The surgeon makes incisions behind the ears and/or under the chin, depending on the specific needs of the patient. These incisions are strategically placed to minimize visible scarring. Once the incisions are made, the surgeon lifts and tightens the underlying muscles (platysma muscles) in the neck to correct muscle banding and create smoother contours. Other neck tissues like glands or fat pads may also need to be treated to create the right contours.

Step 2: Skin Redraping

After addressing the underlying tissues, the surgeon redrapes the skin over the newly tightened neck area. A separate incision under the chin is often necessary for liposuctioning this area and to repair the muscle. Any excess skin is trimmed away to create a firmer, more youthful appearance. One option for older patients with large amounts of excess skin in the center of their neck is a procedure called a direct neck lift or Z-plasty.

Step 3: Closure

The goal of neck lift closure is to achieve natural-looking results while minimizing scarring and promoting optimal healing. The surgeon will close the incisions with sutures or other techniques and may apply dressings to protect the surgical site and aid in healing. Once healed, the incision lines from a neck lift are concealed within the hairline and in the natural contours of the ear.
