To determine if otoplasty is right for you, Dr. Johnson reviews your medical history and desired results. She examines your ears and lets you know what to expect during the procedure before customizing a cosmetic surgery treatment plan. She usually completes the procedure on both of your ears during the same surgery to ensure outstanding symmetry.
You Won’t Believe Your Ears!
Otoplasty is a surgical procedure commonly referred to as ear pinning. During this procedure, the ears are reshaped, repositioned, or reduced in size to achieve a more proportionate and aesthetically pleasing appearance. Otoplasty can address a variety of concerns, including prominent ears (ears that stick out too far from the head), asymmetry, or deformities caused by injury or congenital conditions.
If you’re bothered by protruding ears, request an appointment to discuss your otoplasty in Fort Worth with Dr. Johnson.

How is Otoplasty Performed?
Step 1: Consultation
You’ll meet Dr. Johnson at our office in Fort Worth, where she will listen to your concerns and desired results. She will examine the ears, explain options that will best suit you or your child, and answer any questions you may have. It’s important to note otoplasty can only be performed once the ears have reached their full size, typically after age 5.

Step 2: Procedure
Otoplasty is an outpatient procedure in which we place the child under general anesthesia. Adults may elect to have this procedure under local anesthesia with oral sedation. The otoplasty takes 2 to 3 hours. During this time Dr. Johnson makes incisions on the back of the ear(s). The cartilage is folded into the desired position, and the ear will be pinned with internal stitches. Excess skin and cartilage may also be removed.

Step 3: Recovery
Our staff will provide thorough post-surgery guidelines for you or your child’s otoplasty. Pain is typically mild and easily managed with acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Patients can typically return to work or school within 1 week after surgery, depending on individual comfort levels and the nature of their activities.
