To find out if rhinoplasty is for you, Dr. Johnson examines your nose and reviews your medical history. She takes several preoperative photos, asks about your desired results, lets you know what to expect during the procedure, and discusses the ways to best prepare for your rhinoplasty in Fort Worth. You might need blood tests before your procedure. You may also be required to stop taking certain medicines or supplements and avoid certain foods and drinks for a period of time before surgery.

Expectations for Results
It’s important to note that rhinoplasty is a complex procedure requiring careful planning and execution by an experienced surgeon. Full results become apparent gradually over several weeks to months as swelling subsides and the nose settles into its new shape.
How is a Rhinoplasty Performed?
Step 1: Anesthesia
The patient is administered one of two forms of anesthesia. Local anesthesia may be used to numb the area of the nose and face. Sedation is available to keep the patient relaxed but awake and aware throughout the surgery. General anesthesia puts patients to sleep during the procedure. The method of anesthesia given to you will be based on the extent of surgery required.
Step 2: Incisions and Nose Reshaping
Depending on the goals of the surgery, the surgeon performs a closed rhinoplasty, in which incisions are made either inside the nostrils or open rhinoplasty, where the incisions are made across the skin between and inside the nostrils. Once complete, the underlying bone and cartilage of the nose are rearranged and reshaped to achieve the desired aesthetic or functional outcome.
Step 3: Recovery and Follow-up
Nasal splints or packs may be placed inside the nose. External splints or bandages may also be applied to provide additional support and protection. After surgery, the patient is monitored for a brief period and is often allowed to go home the same day. Patients can typically return to work or school within 1 to 2 weeks of surgery.
Rhinoplasty FAQs
Though the problem may appear massive to you, Dr. Johnson makes minuscule changes measured in millimeters. Often, a tiny change can make a huge difference in how your nose appears. Keep in mind all faces are naturally asymmetrical to some extent.
Before undergoing rhinoplasty, you receive localized numbing and anesthesia to help you feel relaxed or fall asleep. Dr. Johnson uses strategically placed incisions to remove, repair, or replace tissues as needed to help achieve your goals. She may place gauze, a splint, and/or bandages on or in your nose before taking you to a recovery area.
Have a friend or family member drive you home after the procedure and stay with you. Follow your post-care instructions to ensure proper healing. Get plenty of sleep, take medicines as directed, and attend follow-up visits with Dr. Johnson to ensure your nose heals properly.
Avoid strenuous activity, blowing your nose, sneezing through your nose, vigorously brushing your teeth, or making extreme facial expressions until Dr. Johnson says it’s okay to do so. You will also be asked to sleep with your head slightly elevated.
